As Pastor Todd Mullins prayed about what he needed to share with the members of Christ Fellowship, one word kept rising to the surface: freedom. And as he dug a little deeper, he realized that God was calling him to help the families of his West Palm Beach, Florida, congregation shatter the financial chains that were holding so many of them back.

Momentum, a plan that equips churches to move at least 80 percent of their members through Financial Peace University (FPU), allowed Christ Fellowship to pause its normal programs to focus on financial discipleship. During that time, Christ Fellowship coordinated 225 classes with over 10,000 participants. Going through the class with the entire church body removed the fear many members had of needing “the financial class.” Meanwhile, the church’s students studied Generation Change, and the children attended Financial Peace Junior classes. The church continues to impact lives by offering stewardship classes to 20,000 plus attendees at multiple campuses.

Christ Fellowship’s leaders say the results have been amazing. Financially, families began to get their lives in order—some for the first time. But money is only part of the story. Marriages have been healed, and family trees have been changed for generations to come.

Mullins understands the hesitation some pastors may feel, especially if their personal financial history has been a little shaky. But he emphasizes that past failures don’t disqualify anyone from learning or leading.

“Don’t let that stop you from leading your people to freedom,” he says. “In fact, along the journey, just sharing your own struggles actually opens people up. People always learn more from our failures than from our successes.”
